I want to give some helpful tips to people who are interested in doing a home-based business but have no idea of what type of business they want to do, or even what the focus of the business should be.
There’s really a lot of self-evaluation possible in determining a good business, at least if you’re thinking about a long-term dream business. This process takes time, so I would encourage you to focus on doing something that you can do that will make money in a shorter time. If you don’t know What business to do, there are a lot of resources available including on this website, and many great blogs and videos on the topic.
In the short- to medium-term, I would encourage you to take a look at Wealthy Affiliate (my review page, which has the links), which I promote and am a member of for the last 2 months and going. You can earn good money as an affiliate once you have gained the skills, but it does take some months to a year or more to earn a good living from this. That is an affiliate link, but you can join for free and I only get a commission if you find value in it and decide to upgrade.
I have plenty of other tips about how to make money quicker, see also my article on Network Marketing.
Now, I’m going to talk about a good place to explore your desires and your interests for determining your ultimate dream business.
Lots of Educational content on the Internet
We all know about YouTube, of course, which has the most free videos of probably any website on the Internet. There are too many educational videos there on so many topics I couldn’t possibly go through them all.
But, as an example that is near and dear to my heart, let’s say you are really into music.
Here’s a simple search I did – it has thousands of results, maybe. I scrolled past 3 ads and got these as the first 4 results:
Okay, you may be saying. I get the point. But how do you make money playing the piano?
I know, it takes a bit more creativity, and I will be thinking long and hard about it because I play the piano and that is actually my dream business.
But if you want something a bit more practical, here it is:
I think we can all agree that if you have good sales skills you can make money, right?
And you can learn a lot about that on YouTube.
If you want another resource, here it is.
Paid Educational Websites
One great place to find training to learn practical skills is on a website called Skillshare. You may have heard of it. They have thousands and thousands of courses, and you can watch them anytime. You get access to all of their content for the low monthly fee of $10 a month. That’s pretty low.
In fact, new members get the first 2 months for free so you have lots of time to check it out. I just started a course called Honest Selling Secrets: How to Be Good at Sales Without Compromising Your Ethics. It’s nice and short, only 19 minutes for a series of 8 videos in this course. If you want to learn practical skills, this is a great place to do it.
They also have an affiliate program. Obviously, with a $10 product, it doesn’t pay much. But if you join them through my link and continue after the 2 free months as a paying member, I get my next month’s fee waived. It doesn’t cost you any extra for that. Once you join you can refer people the same way and get a free month.
A few of the many other practical skills taught there: Photography, Computer programming, graphic design, filmmaking, social media, e-commerce, audio recording, forex trading, and those are just the ones that come up on the front page of the website!
I am also a member of another paid educational site called Skillsuccess.com; They are less well-known and have one free month, then you can get unlimited access for $19 a month. There is no affiliate program here but I am enjoying a good course called “21 Awesome Affiliate Programs.”
I have been a member of both of these sites for years, and I highly recommend you look into them and try them out if you need ideas for your business.
There are also good resources at Lynda.com (now owned by LinkedIn) and https://www.udemy.com/ but I have never tried either of them out.
You Know Yourself Better than Anyone
Honestly, if anyone can figure out what you want to be doing long-term, it’s you. I hope you don’t give up in this process of exploring your desires, skills, and passions.
It’s never too late to learn a new skill.
I hope you have found this helpful.
Conclusion
There are lots of great sources and platforms for exploring your dreams.
Years ago, when I was still in high school, I was uncertain what I wanted to do with my life. I went to college for Mathematics, because that was my best subject in high school, but I never figured out what I wanted to do with it as a career.
I have often wished there was a course in which you could experience actually doing what other people do in their careers, for just one day. Just trying out various things. I felt like my life would have been better if I could actually try lots of different things with little risk or commitment required.
Now, with the internet, that possibility exists. It’s not a formal single course, but you have the freedom with these monthly membership plans, and the free content on YouTube, to explore whatever topics you want to.
I hope everyone appreciate this. I certainly do.
I still need to follow through with the courses I have signed up for, but I have benefited from them in various ways already. Just knowing they’re available is a big comfort.
You’re doing a really good job explaining the process of starting an online business and how people can use it to make money online nowadays.
It’s hard to get helpful advice and to decide in which direction you should be going when you’re a beginner with no previous experience.
I truly hope that you’ll be able to reach a lot of people with this article and guide them on the path of building a business of their own.
Everyone needs help at the beginning and this post gets the job done nicely.
Great work, keep it up!
That is a very nice comment. I am glad I was able to help you.
Bryce, you did an excellent job of explaining how to begin an online business. One thing that you and I both know is that any niche business can generate money, if done properly. I play the piano as well (I haven’t taken lessons in forever, but I still have some musical chops. Haha). It’s amazing to see how just how accessible information is nowadays; unless you don’t have a computer, smartphone, or the like, there are absolutely no excuses for not learning something new. Kudos to you! God bless you!
You make some excellent points, however there are some people still working who have children and actually have less free time now than they normally would. However, I agree that anyone with the desire and opportunity can access a wealth of information now. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
